In continuation of Admiralty telegram of
30th. June concerning the working of the Chine ocastal trade, Admiralty wires (Begins) In order that absolutely essential requirements of various British interests may be met with minimum of tonnage, Shipping Controller earbestly desires co-operation of yourself and Commodore Hongkong with Hongkong Local Committee, as final responsibility for providing, co-ordinating and requisitioning all tonnage will rest with him. For sake of convenience, suggest your communicate your views and advise to Local Committee through Commodore, who of course will keep in close touch. If B. I. can still maintain run, please explain why Calcutta, Singapore, Hongkong line is vital to Straits Settlements. (Enda). I have replied as follows (Begins) Further close enquiry is being made by Government of Straits Settlements concerning Calcutta, Singapore, Hongkong run and I will reply later on this point. By reports from Tokyo,
Hongkong and India, British India oerry essentials and Non-essentials to Hongkong for transhipment to United States and Canada and to
Japan and vice versa to Singapore and India. If enquiry showe
this line can take place of Indo-Chine, it will only be by its
running regular trips and carrying only essentials (Ends) Should
be glad if Hongkong Government would furnish as early as possible
similar detailed information, on which course eventually to be
adopted will depend.
